On the basis of NAFTA, the United States, Mexico and Canada have agreed to cooperate in other agricultural for a, improve transparency and consultations on issues related to trade between countries. As stated in the agreement, the main objectives of the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement were dairy products. Canada operates a restrictive supply management system for dairy, poultry and eggs, a program explicitly excluded from NAFTA (see box below). The Trump administration is working to see Canada dismantle the system, while Canada is committed to maintaining the system. Canada`s previous agreements, such as the TPP, have allowed for better market access without dismantling the system. For its part, Canada says any discussion on supply management should include U.S. milk subsidies. U.S. milk producers are also concerned about export restrictions on ultrafiltered milk.
This protein-rich product, which was not developed during the NAFTA era and to which no tariff lines are linked, was one of the few dairy products freely exported to Canada. However, a new Canadian ingredient pricing strategy has jeopardized this access by incentivizing Canadian dairy processors to use domestic ingredients over imports.82 Strong organized opposition to NAFTA has focused on concerns that the removal of trade barriers will encourage U.S. companies to pack their bags and move to Mexico for cheap labour. This concern grew in the early 2000s, when the economy experienced a recession and the subsequent recovery turned out to be a “recovery from unemployment.” Opposition to NAFTA was also strong among environmental groups who claimed that the anti-pollution elements of the treaty were particularly inadequate. These criticisms have not wavered since the implementation of NAFTA. In fact, both Mexico and Canada have been repeatedly named for environmental offences. ==The House of Representatives is working on USMCA, U.S. House of Representatives spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi said on Sept. 26. The United States and Canada enjoy the largest trading relationships in the world, supporting millions of jobs in each country.
The U.S. and Canada sold $725 billion worth of goods and services in 2019 — nearly $US 2 billion a day. Canada and the United States are the largest export markets for the other and Canada is the largest export market for more than 30 U.S. states. In addition, Canada is the largest foreign energy supplier to the United States. Canada has the third largest oil reserves after Saudi Arabia and Venezuela and is the only non-member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in the top five. Canada and the United States operate an integrated electricity grid according to jointly developed reliability standards. .
